You’re free to believe what you want to believe, but I don’t think this was the case at all.

No matter what either of our opinions are, I think that the biggest decision was keeping the element of surprise.

If they’d announced an Indian actor, people would automatically make an association to Khan.

Thus ruining the build up of suspense, in the eyes of the filmmakers.

Right or wrong, as I said.

Well said. And, coming from a former theater major, in theater terms, we call that the suspension of disbelief. I have seen a black woman play a white woman, an Asian man play a black man, etc and it's not affected my perception of the role. All that mattered was the performance. Yes, in Hollywood, there are plenty of people of color to fill the roles, but sometimes it's about the acting, the method.

My 16-year-old stepdaughter recently was in a production of ‘Godspell’.

Even though I’m an atheist, ‘Godspell’ is probably one of my favourite musicals.

I think it’s because you can have so much variety with the adaptations, no two productions of the show look exactly alike.

I was in ‘Godspell’ when I was her age at my own high school, and our ‘Jesus’ was an Asian female.

There is an element of artistic license that is considered when choosing a cast, and sometimes it ends up controversial.

Regarding something about star trek you said a while ago, Khan would actually be from the 90s. He was in cryosleep for a long time, 300 years, which is how he ended up in the movie's time period, so the name discrepancy still seems weird.

Interesting point, but this makes me think of something that happened during my time at university.

I was taking an ‘Anthropology of Race and Racism’ class. We were shown the film adaptation of ‘Black Like Me’ and asked to write a review about it.

During the class following the one where we turned in our papers, our (white) professor was pissed.

Just in case you’re unfamiliar with what I’m talking about, ‘Black Like Me’ was a sort of memoir published by a white journalist named John Howard Griffin in 1961.

He chemically darkened his skin pigment temporarily, with the assistance of a physician. He then traveled throughout the segregated Southern U.S. and documented his experiences with how he was treated because people unknowingly thought he was black.

The reason my professor was pissed off, was because many of the reviews included things like ‘but the actor who was playing the main character just looked like a white guy with a painted face’, specifically pointing to how thin the actor’s (James Whitmore’s) nose was.

She then pointed out that there were so many aesthetic differences within a certain ‘race’ and that’s why the idea of race was arbitrary. Humans are humans, and it’s society that forms what ‘race’ really is in our heads. There are many ‘black’ people with aquiline noses, it’s just a stereotype that is subconsciously associated by general society.

And that this was the whole point of the class.

It was an eye-opening moment, and I’m really glad I was in class that day to see all the jaws drop with this concept.

There were 200 people sitting there who thought, ‘Shit, she’s right.’

Anyway, that’s sort of the way I feel about Khan, specifically Khan played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

If you read my post, you’ll remember that I mentioned my guy friend with the last name ‘Ramirez’ who appears as though his last name should be Irish or something.

Or take me for example.

I have extensive Native-Canadian heritage, but my skin colour takes after my paternal Ukrainian side. If I were to show you pictures of some of my maternal aunts and uncles, you’d never believe we were related.

Who says a guy that ‘looks’ white can’t have an Indian name?

Also, the person who played Khan originally was Ricardo Montalban, who definitely wasn’t Indian.

I can understand the ire over a non-Indian person playing an Indian person.

But ultimately, I think the studio (however rightly or wrongly) chose an actor who doesn’t look how the current general public perceive an Indian person to look, as an element of surprise with the plot line.

I respectfully disagree with your statement.

It is possible for people to be in love more than once.

Telling me that my feelings of love were invalid just because I’m not currently with guys I was in love with anymore (or couldn’t have in the first place) is unfair.

I know you were actually talking to the anon who asked me that question, but this is my personal opinion about your statement.

Which I feel justified in giving, because it’s my page after all ;)

As for not letting go of someone that you love, sometimes a person doesn’t have a choice in the matter and sometimes it can be for the best.

Say you’re happy and in love, but the other person just isn’t anymore. Hanging onto them without considering their feelings isn’t fair to them or yourself.

But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t real love going on at some point in the relationship.

Love isn’t black and white like that.

It doesn’t fit into a neat little box.

The idea of ’love’ is a social construct that human beings attach to a broad and complex spectrum of feelings that may be felt and interpreted by different people in different ways.

I took a peek at your age in your blog description and saw that you are very young. About the age I was when I got my first boyfriend, a guy I ended up being with for 8 years.

Your views will change as you age and gain life experience, even if you’re sure that they won’t.

Not to say that I don’t sincerely hope that you find your one true love and are with them forever.

It’s just something that is very rare.

Sounds like a shitty answer, but it depends.

The few times I’ve been in love, most of the time I’ve just known it.

But there have been a couple of times where I was in love with someone and didn’t want to admit it to myself even though everyone else knew it but me.

But those times I knew I couldn’t have the person, so ignoring my real feelings was a defense mechanism.

I always good-naturedly bug my roommate about her healthy food.

Our cupboards are full of lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, millet, and various other healthy grains and legumes and bullshit.

Freezer full of fruit.

That sort of thing.

I should eat a lot healthier than I do, my four food groups are McNuggets, Ham, Toast, and Sour Cream.

But hey, at least I love juice.

Anyway, the other day I’d noticed ‘Brown Rice Triscuits’ sitting on our pantry shelf.

‘Brown Rice Triscuits? Really? That sounds terrible,’ I laughed.

‘Fuck you, bitch. They’re delicious,’ she answered.

I’ve been teasing her about those Triscuits for the last week.

Today I wanted to eat some special cheese that I’d bought, and realized I had nothing to eat them with.

I heard a tiny, evil laugh coming from the Triscuit box.
